Mike and Melissa Keleman are working hard to preserve Ohio’s heritage of family farming. But there’s something special about Keleman Point Farm–it’s inside a national park. We journey to the Cuyahoga Valley to see how small farmers are playing a vital role in restoring and sustaining public lands for all of America.

Situated between the urban hubs of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley is unique among America’s national parks in its proximity to large populations. Its story is not one of untouched wilderness, but rather one of the interaction between humans and nature. “We are a park to the people,” says CVNP Superintendent Lisa Petit. “In all of our farms, we have a really wonderful demonstration of how local food can be grown in a sustainable way to support the community.”
When the Cuyahoga Valley National Park was created, they found that their land encompassed many heritage farming properties constituting an important part of the valley’s cultural history. But these farms mostly sat vacant until 1999, when The Countryside Initiative formed to match the properties with new families who could work with the Park to revitalize the land through sustainable farming.
Mike and Melissa Keleman dreamed of living off the land, and so they applied to become the latest stewards of a farm with 150 years of history in the community. Through rotational grazing, they’re fostering a biodiverse ecosystem that allows heritage breed animals like Tennessee Fainting Goats to live their best lives while their grasslands capture over 70 tons of atmospheric carbon each year.
Whether it’s providing heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners, fresh eggs, produce, and delicious homemade jams at their farmstand, or simply a place for families to connect with nature, the Kelemans are proudly carrying on the Cuyahoga Valley’s vibrant agricultural tradition.
