Rabindrasangeet to many takes on the role of a personal religion, a body of knowledge that is strengthening and nurturing in times of personal crises, encouraging and inspiring in moments of weakness, passionate in moments of romantic bliss, healing in moods of romantic despair. Tagore’s songs covering the entire gamut of human emotions were broadly divided by the poet among several thematic groups – love, devotional, seasons, occasion specific and dance-drama compositions. For Tagore, the beloved and the divine were often interchangeable and, as a consequence, his love songs and devotional songs often tend to overlap (The relevance of Tagore’s music today, by Reba Som, 2011).

Included in the Prem parjay, the deeply personal tenor of the verses in Anek katha bolechhilem tugs at the heart-strings. It speaks of wing`ed whispers, deep nights, dream-like musings, the fragrant clammy earth, and a deluge of memories.

Tania Mannan was coached in music by none other than the distinguished music exponent and teacher Waheedul Haque. Many opine that the hallmarks of Waheedul Haque’s mentor Sailajaranjan Majumdar’s style, is aptly reflected in Tania’s rendition of Tagore’s music. Her soft intonation, clarity, and deep immersion in the music, makes each song a gem, with perfect balance between lyrics, melody and rhythm. It is in this sense that singing Tagore’s songs is like reciting a prayer in a language that one can relate to and in a music which is soulful.
