I often mention the love that Japan and Japanese fans have for music of all genres. And that love has been especially noticeable over the decades for well-known Western jazz musicians.
So much so that, back in the day, a few annual jazz festivals were started in Japan. The first of these was Live Under The Sky, which started in 1977, and was the most accessible and featured some of the world's greatest jazz performers.
I was fortunate enough to have attended the '91 Live Under The Sky festival and loved every minute of it. Which was the penultimate festival as it turned out.
The '92 festival, which this video captures, was, alas, the last Live Under The Sky Festival. The collapse of the bubble economy quickly rippled through the Japanese economy and there were many casualties along the way.
What I love about YouTube is that videos like this, of an absolutely awesome live concert from 3 decades ago, can live on indefinitely. And bring the magic of the music and of these live shows to listeners / viewers for years to come!
Enjoy!! And share!!
