Beacons are low-cost pieces of hardware, which use Bluetooth low energy connections to send prompts or messages to smart devices. Mobile proximity technologies such as beacons are set to transform how retailers market to consumers.
The Connected High Street initiative creates a personalised and hyper-relevant shopping experience by connecting consumers on their mobiles with 20 participating merchants, and is the first to include an existing bus network. Centred on Loka™, a location-based app that provides relevant content and offers (available on iOS and Android), gives shoppers the opportunity to discover and purchase new products, as well as receive rewards such as coupons, discounts and loyalty services, via beacon technology.
The consumer needs to be fully engaged in order to receive beacon notifications to their phone. They need to have download the Loka app and also switch their Bluetooth Low Energy on.
