Raventos i Blanc is the story of a family inextricably linked to their land, a winemaking tradition going back over 500 years, proven by ancient documents still held at the estate. The Raventos i Blanc estate, which has belonged to the Raventos family since 1497, covers 300 acres of vineyards, woodlands and a lake in the main town of Penedes. In 1872 the owner at the time (of course a member of the family) made the very first 'champagne method' sparkling wine in all of Spain, from grapes grown on the estate. From this historic bottle, the very idea of Cava and the laws surrounding it would grow... this family was in many ways responsible for the Spanish sparkling wine industry!
In the modern world, the estate has moved with speed to stay at the forefront of the sparkling wine production in the region, recently converting their entire vineyards to biodynamics and removing the use of artificial fertilisers completely. The vineyards are healthier for it, and the wines have never been better. This is in part thanks to current winemaker and custodian of the estate, Pepe Raventos, who has been tireless in his work to improve the vines and wines. After working at leading estates across Europe, he now brings his expertise to bear at his home vineyard, crafting long lived and succulent sparkling wines for future generations to enjoy.
Such a lovely wine, full flavoured but fine textured, with a succulence that just goes on and on. A real Champagne competitor, albeit with a different flavour profile. Look out for signature Cava green apple freshness tied to saline notes, zesty acidity and plenty of mineral drive. The mid-palate of this wine is all soft, creamy, pastry flavours, before the freshness kicks in again and the acidity takes over. Very long and elegant on the finish.
