To celebrate the release of The HERMES Experiment: A Personal Story by Richard Milner and Erhard Steffens, we invite you to join the virtual book launch with the two authors as they talk about the book and recall their experience working on the HERMES experiment for over a decade. They will discuss the inception and commissioning of HERMES, its scientific results, and many other facets of the international collaboration, followed by a Q&A session.
This book describes the story of how a collaboration of several hundred physicists from Europe and North America formed in 1988 to design, construct, install, commission and operate, for the years 1995–2007 the technically innovative HERMES experiment at DESY to study the spin structure of the fundamental structure of matter. The authors played a leading role within the HERMES collaboration. They describe, in an accessible language, the technical design of HERMES, the story of its installation and commissioning, and the various phases of the thirteen years of running. They also recount the social life in such an international collaboration, as shown in their personal reminiscences over several decades. The book ends with a summary of the HERMES scientific results, their considerable impact, and how HERMES shaped an entire generation of young people into scientific leaders.
