Prior to the pandemic, top-level executives were uneasy about their leaders’ ability to handle unexpected challenges. Only 1 in 5 executives surveyed believed their leaders had the skills needed to achieve their organization’s current and future strategic priorities. That was in 2018, let’s fast forward to now.

In addition to creating a massive humanitarian challenge, the pandemic has created business challenges unlike any we have ever faced. Abrupt dislocation of how employees work, changes in customer priorities and workplace practices, and ultimately what constitutes business performance and how we measure it to name a few.

As a result, leaders have had to shift how they lead in expedient and ingenious ways. Add to this the upswelling of social justice demands, this unique moment requires a new set of leadership imperatives with great potential beyond this crisis. The opportunity is now for re-calibration and re-imagination, with profound implications for the organization on how they identify and develop leaders for the future and beyond.
