(3 Apr 2020) New Yorkers have reacted with differing views on the use of protective face masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Mixed messages about whether people should be wearing protective face masks has left many confused and frustrated.
As US public health officials learn more about the novel coronavirus and how it spreads, they are revisiting whether healthy people should consider wearing face masks when they go out in public.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that masks be reserved for medical workers and sick people - not worn by the general public since the outbreak.
But differences of opinion are starting to emerge.
Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City now recommends that residents wear homemade masks or scarves over their nose and mouth when they leave their homes.
Some New York residents out exercising in the parks on Thursday urged authorities to give clear guidance.
"I wish that they would just like come out with some transparency about why what was said was said instead of just like changing the instruction and expecting people to continue to listen to them," fashion designer Rachael Minjock said.
The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
