(12 Aug 2020) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday praised the security defence partnership with the Czech Republic after talks with the country's Prime Minister Andrej Babis, calling it a "great team".
Pompeo said he warned Babis that partnering with Russia and China would "undermine the Czech Republic's national sovereignty", as both countries are seeking greater roles throughout the continent in the energy, infrastructure and telecommunications sectors.
"We want to commend the Czech Republic's choice of American hardware to replace Soviet air defence equipment and reduce dependence on Russian gear", Pompeo said at the media briefing in Prague.
He also thanked the Czech leader for reaffirming his country's "commitment with our joint declaration on 5G security".
