The 1st Movement (Daydreams - Passions) of Berlioz's ground-breaking Symphonie Fantastique is a story in music. It describes the dreams and visions of an over-sensitive artist (Berlioz himself?). Beethoven had depicted nature in music in his 6th Symphony, the Pastoral, but Berlioz's genius takes the idea of story-telling through music to a new level. The all important 'Idee Fixe' (shown in blue) is a sweetly innocent and charmingly graceful melody which represents the artist's ideal woman. It re-appears in various guises throughout the movement (and the symphony as a whole), always coloured by the artist's ever changing, opium induced, visions
