Hello!
Invasive species 101. For a while now I have been contemplating this episode. I absolutely hate this plant as an invasive species, yet in the same breath, admire its resilience. It is incredibly useful and beautiful. I know many may not agree purely because we are taught to dislike it. So we do, yet if tomorrow we were told something positive and different about it, would we still see it as visually distasteful? Perhaps not.
When I noticed this vine in our Afro-montane forests along the narrow coastal strip that is the garden route of South Africa I noticed the need and started a project (whilst working as a conservationist) in 2008; focusing specifically on this plant. We were pioneers at this stage in our country with the management of this particular species. My staff at the time were methodically trained and the entire process was trial and error until we finally managed to develop a relatively successful method of eradicating it.
Honestly, we still have a long way to go as it is able to invade nearly every biome and has few natural predators. That said, I hope this video brings to light some of the seriousness linked to A. cordifolia as an invasive not just in S.A. but also around the world.
