In this 2-in-1 rescue video, fishing lines play the big culprit again....
This was taken at Cape Cross, Namibia, right off the walkway. The OCN team consisting of Naude, Francois and Denzil saw their first victim right next to the walkway, and then a second one a little further down towards the beach. The plan was laid down first, and worked out surprisingly well.
They hopped over the fence, and Denzil almost immediately managed to secure the first pup in the net. Naude ran past this one, and grabbed the second one closer to the water, just before he managed to escape.
Both pups were entangled in thin recreational fishing line. This type of line is commonly used by shore fishermen in Namibia. The coastline is quite rocky, so often the lines get stuck the the fishermen need to break the line as there is no alternative. These lines end up staying in the ocean, and can take decades to degrade. 🦭
