Hi. I’m Josh Mauer, radio broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers. It is my pleasure serving as Emcee for the 2023 Seena Magowitz Foundation’s Power of Us Dinner On The Diamond at American Family Field, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
It is a distinct honor to introduce Kay Kays, recipient of the “PANCREATIC CANCER SURVIVOR SPIRIT AWARD.
Diagnosed in 1994, Kay is a 29-Year Survivor of Pancreatic Cancer. She had the Whipple Procedure to remove the tumor from her pancreas. In 1994 there was little effective treatment for pancreatic cancer. Back then, getting the worst type of pancreatic cancer (Adenocarcinoma) was practically a death sentence with few surviving the first year yet alone reaching the 5-year mark. Doctors told Kay if the cancer returned she would likely succumb to the disease within 4 to 6 months.
After about 5 years, the cancer did return and she had her pancreas and spleen completely removed. Three years later her cancer metastasized to her lymph nodes making the diagnosis stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She read an article about researcher, Dr. Daniel Von Hoff and became one of his first targeted therapy patients.
Well, upon reaching a 29-year survival, Kay was very fortunate and now dedicates the bulk of her time mentoring other pancreatic cancer patients. She is a lead moderator of the Seena Magowitz Foundation “Patient and Caregiver Support Group”.
Besides counseling patients that attend the Support Group, Kay is also a Research Grant Reviewer and she has recently been appointed as a Patient Advocate for the NCI Pancreas Task Force representing the Seena Magowitz Foundation
Based upon accomplishments over 29 years of survival defying almost impossible odds, no one is more deserving of a “Survivor Spirit Award” than Kay Kays.
