Swatching the new Makeup By Mario Ethereal Eyes Moonlight Palette.
I included a few looks along with some side by side photos with other palettes I have. These are mainly to give you an idea of where the cool tones in here lie and what they look like at least on my skintone as well as to give you an idea what the shimmers look like.
Below are my thoughts on the formula so far but I’ve only done a handful of looks so take this with a grain of salt:
Most everything in this palette has a surprisingly “airy”, lightweight, silky feel compared to many of the eyeshadows I have in other palettes.
The mattes are super smooth, fine, and almost slippery, but they don’t have a buttery or dense feel. They are drier to the touch and kick up easily in the pan at the touch of a brush. On the eye, the lighter mattes show up well but don’t build up in intensity a whole lot. The deeper mattes have much more color payoff/pigmentation but seem to build in a similar way. There is a bit of fallout from the deeper mattes but tapping excess off my brush works well enough to get around this. It’s easy to move color around on the skin once I place it on the lid. Blending and diffusing color is no problem but on that same token, it’s also easy to reduce color intensity or move color I don’t necessarily want to if I’m not careful.
There are 4 sparkly shimmers in this palette. I got a lot of fallout from this finish and felt it was necessary to use a setting spray on my brush to keep the mess under control. The effect I get on the eye from these shades is not too different from the Elf Fine As Fleck Glitter Eyeshadows I just swatched. I get a similar type of sheer wash of sparkle, though the sparkle in this palette is a bit larger and a bit shinier. However I also get a lot more fallout from the Makeup By Mario shimmers. There is one satiny shimmer which is far less shiny and has almost no fallout. The pale nude in the upper left corner has the tiniest bit of pearl in it but I didn’t find that pearl was even noticeable in person. It looks for the most part just like a matte.
Besides the few potential drawbacks I mentioned above, the shadows do their job. I feel like I need to play with the palette several more times to have a really solid opinion. I will say I think nearly $70 is too much for this palette. Some things work better in here than cheaper options I have (like the deeper mattes, and the color tones and edited down shade selection are excellent) but other things in here don’t seem better than lower cost options (like the shimmers and the more pale mattes). I bought it early for the purpose of making this video but personally I would have rather paid the Sephora sale price :)
