Excerpt from "Exposure" (aka "High Art", aka "A Grande Arte", 1991) by the Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles. Exposure is hard to find now, and has a cult following.

These scenes are some of the most captivating in the film. Peter Mandrake (Peter Coyote), a photgrapher living in Rio, has been attacked and stabbed by thugs, his girlfriend (Amanda Pays) brutally raped. Seeking revenge, he searches out a mysterious knife fight expert named "Hermés" (played the wonderful French actor Tcheky Karyo) who he wants to teach him how to knife fight.

And Hermes teaches.

Certainly there is many similariies in the scene when Mandrake and Hermes go to see the knife dealer to buy a knife, and a similar scene in "Taxi Driver" when Travis meets with the gun dealer.
