What comes to mind when you hear the term “steel frame home”?

For many, they envision tall commercial buildings that are constructed in the middle of cities.

However, steel frames are becoming much more popular for homes for numerous reasons.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re contemplating this method of construction for an upcoming residential building project.

Take a lesson from emergency housing. Well learn more about the sun shower house at the end of this video but first, if you plan to build a home yourself consider using steel frame construction, and today's video we have the top things you should know. Number one, what is a steel frame home?  

A steel frame home is anon-standard construction. It uses lightweight steel studs rather than wood lumber to form a structural skeleton of a house. Number two, what are the pros of steel frame homes? First of all, steel frames are lighter than wood.

They're also durable fire resistant, and moisture resistant, and because steel components can be made quickly and transported for fast assembly. It can save time when building a home. Other benefits include the fact that steel frames are customizable and environmentally friendly primarily because steel is recyclable and in some instances comes with lower home insurance rates.

Number three, what are the cons of steel frame homes? It's the primary downside and the reason why you don't see a light gauge. Steel construction more often is that it is more expensive than wood. Steel also conducts heat.

So it can be harder to control the interior air temperature. In addition, you may have some design limitations with light gauge steel and finally while steel is fairly immune to damage as far as fire rot and rodents go rust can become a real problem depending on where the house is located and how it is constructed and number four. How do steel and timber frame homes compare? Well, both construction methodologies have their own advantages and disadvantages but here are some of the key differences.

Cost is the primary factor. Steel frames cost a fair amount more than wood frames. Longevity is also a major difference.

All other things held constant. A steel frame should last a fair amount longer than a wood frame. Another thing to keep in mind is that steel does conduct heat more than wood. This means that you may have higher heating and cooling costs and flexibility.

You may find that there is fewer constructor who can work with steel frame homes. On the other hand, it can be faster to construct with steel. So that covers the basics of steel frame construction but we're not quite done yet.
