European Basketball Cup final. Tel Aviv had victory over Real Madrid with 81 points to 80.
A dramatic final score by Maccabi Tel Aviv's captain Micky Berkowitz (9) ensured victory for the home side against Real Madrid in the European Basketball Cup final on Thursday (22/1). Berkowitz, a veteran of many a hard-fought battle in the European game, scored the vital two points with just sixteen seconds left on the clock. That left the final result 81 to 80 points in favour of Maccabi, one of Europe's most consistent teams.
Neither team gained the ascendancy in the preceding forty minutes of play. For the Spaniards, Antonio Corbalan was the best player in the first half, but injury prevented him from appearing after the interval. The advantage shifted first from one side to the other until Berkowitz made his crucial score. A few moments earlier Larry Spriggs had the chance to win the game for Real Madrid, but the former star of the American National Basketball Association (NBA) missed the basket.
