You’ve heard of the major carriers Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. And maybe you’ve heard of some smaller carriers like Cricket Wireless and Virgin Mobile — well these smaller carriers are actually called MVNOs or Mobile Virtual Network Operators.
They don't have their own network and instead piggyback off the network of the big guys. This partnership between the Big Four and MVNOs means their service is cheaper, but that you get the exact same coverage.
MVNO Pros:
- Plans are cheaper
- Good variety of plans (plenty of budget options)
MVNO Cons:
- Data speeds may be slowed in preference to main network customers
- Less phone options
- Less face to face service
