It amazes me how autistic people have been stimming to self-soothe & manage our nervous system fluctuations, and yet no one ever taught us how; It comes to us instinctively & organically.
Yet, many autistic people faces challenges and stigma for stimming and are often not permitted to stim, as it is viewed as socially unacceptable, weird or disruptive.
Enter Neuroscientific studies & Somatic Psychology, where parallels with stimming are abundant; both explore how movement of our own body can help towards regulating our emotional, sensory & psychological demands.
I consider the wide realm of Somatic Psychology to be one of the most neurodivergent friendliest therapeutic approaches since I began my research seven years ago. Mainly because it shifts away from behaviourist approaches towards a broader and scientific based understanding of how our bodies & minds interact with stressors & environmental stimuli. That is to say, this approach doesn’t focus on the person as the disorder, but instead encompasses an exploratory inquisition into the environmental events that may be impacting the individual’s capacity to regulate and respond.
