FYI, these styrofoam molds are called many things, from decorative styrofoam molds to countless others, such as EFIS molds.
Howdy all in this video, I’m repairing styrofoam stucco or plastering trim. Yes, the stucco styrofoam is also called efis.
What the heck does IFIS stand for?
Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) is an exterior wall cladding that utilizes rigid insulation boards on the exterior of the wall sheathing with a plaster appearance exterior skin. EIFS, in its current basic form, was developed in West Germany in the 1960s and introduced in the United States in 1969 by Dryvit.
I have many years of experience with Dry-Vit and consider this stucco system one of the world’s best if properly applied. In fact, we did many hospital exteriors while I was working with the union in the Dry-Vit stucco system.
Moving on in this video, the styrofoam was coated with a heavy finish sand called 16/20 sand.
Thus, I had to use the 16/20 sand lo to match the existing finish.
As all finish materials are designed only to go an eighth inch thick, they tend to crack if applied heavier.
So in this quick fix, I added some Luminite, an accelerator, to the 16/20 sand finish so that it does NOT spider crack or check when it drys.
I was applying about a quarter of an inch to a half-inch.
Adding the lumnite accelerator set this stucco finish instantly without compromising the strength.
In fact, it enhances strength. That’s why it costs about 75 bucks a bag.
You can duplicate this fix more easily than in this video for any homeowner. How?
Go to HD or Lowes and buy a ten-pound box of “rapid set stucco” When mixed and applied, it has the same sand grit and already has the accelerators.
As with all same-day stuccos, please don’t mix it for more than 3 to five minutes. I applied a bonding agent before I applied the new stucco, as the bonding agent holds the new stucco forever or permanently,
If the bonding agent were not used, the new stucco might come off or separate within the first 5 years.
Note I can’t find the weld-crete bonding agent I used.
All stores sell the white Quikrete bonding agent, which effectively adheres new stucco to painted surfaces.
