The Court of Justice of the European Union is expected to rule soon on the legality of Poland’s latest judicial reforms, which include moves to punish judges for speaking out against the changes. Many of them have done so, and they’re not alone: for years now Poland’s government has been accused of trying bring the judiciary under political control. That contravenes the principles of the European Union, which say democracy must rest on the separation of powers. The European Commission has threatened disciplinary measures, but Warsaw shows no sign of backing down. On the contrary, state TV – which is controlled by the ruling party and recently received a controversial budget interest of some 500 million euros - is explicitly vilifying judges in a bid to shore up support for the reforms. Gulliver Cragg reports.
