Why is Protestantism exploding in popularity across nearly every Latin American country? While Latin America was historically over 90% Roman Catholic and largely religious homogeneous, in recent years due to new immigrants, foreign missionaries and dissatisfaction with the prevailing Catholic church, for the past several decades the proportion of Latin Americans identifying as Catholic has plummeted, while those who identify as Protestant have precipitously risen at an unparalleled rate. Countries such as Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador may be the first Protestant majority nations in Latin American history in just a few decades judging by the way things are going.
