Hike from Masca, boat to Los Gigantes, Tenerife, November. We got a taxi from Los Gigantes to Masca and the winding mountainous road was nearly as exciting as the trek to come. It took 4 hours to go down the 650m deep gorge because I like stopping to look at the views and amazing wild tropical plants: agave, aeonium, arundo donax (bamboo-like grass), canary island date palm, ricinus and colocasia. It is steep and challenging and I should have worn my hiking boots not trainers! Sometimes it feels like there's no way out but then it opens up again. Turn the corner and you're in what appears to be a dead end. Carry on through narrow crevices and keep heading down until you get to the beach. If you do this hike beware, it is not for those who dislike heights or those unsteady on their feet. We found ourselves scrambling over huge rocks, shimmying along a metal pipe above water and down some very slippery inclines. Apparently there'd been some torrential rain in the days before we went. There is nothing between Masca and the beach and the last boat back to Los Gigantes was at 5.30pm (in November). Take plenty of water and something to eat because if you don't make it back for the last boat you're stranded on the beach till morning!
