Garbage is a dirty word in Lima, Peru. People are fed up with the garbage which has been piling up in recent weeks.
But things are looking up as Lima's new mayor heads and joins the clean-up effort.
Hundreds of municipal workers swept some Lima streets clean, while garbage trucks hauled away refuse which has plagued the city in recent weeks.
The downtown area is the main target of clean-up efforts since garbage piles reached alarming levels during the holidays.
Lima's mayor joined in - shoveling garbage from the streets. The municipality declared a state of emergency as the first step toward resolving the chaotic situation in the city and surrounding districts.

The neighboring Callao section of Lima also declared a state of emergency. Callao's mayor Alex Kouri toured the area and spoke with residents. Kouri announced that private industry will participate in the clean-up of the Callao.
For some, the solution lies with the neighbors as well as with local government.
