BoatUS Contributing Editor Lenny Rudow shows you how to get your portable outboard motor ready for the spring boating season. These simple spring commissioning checks during the de-winterizing process shouldn't take very long and will help ensure a fun, trouble-free time on the water.
Spring outboard commissioning includes a thorough visual inspection including exterior connections and fuel lines, removing the cowl to check internal connections and wires. Manipulate the steering to ensure it moves smoothly and add grease if needed. Check mounting clamps and bolts to ensure they're tight. Check the prop and zincs. Add muffs or run your engine in a barrel, turn on the hose, start the engine, and burn off the fogging. Finish by adding a coat of paste wax to shine up the cowl and protect the finish.
