Editor-at-Large at the Australian Paul Kelly says calls for parliamentarians to have two weeks of pay docked following the Prime Minister’s request to cancel the next sitting fortnight is "unfair, unworkable and unnecessary".
Centre Alliance Senator Rex Patrick has defended his push for parliamentarians to have two weeks of pay docked following the Prime Minister’s request to cancel the next sitting fortnight.
“We have work to do, we cannot afford to be cutting sitting days from the calendar,” Senator Patrick said.
Scott Morrison on 2GB Radio on Wednesday morning dismissed the Senator’s push as “just political clickbait”.
Mr Patrick told Sky News $1,000 should be docked from senators’ pay for every sitting day that was cancelled and not rescheduled because "we are not performing our core function".
"If we're serious about this, I think these comments are unfair, unworkable and unnecessary," Mr Kelly told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
"Clearly the parliament is going to come back at some time, it's got to come back at some time to pass the government's legislation".
"Most MPs had nothing to do with the decision anyway".
Mr Kenny said it was a "different issue" whether politicians should take a pay cut "in terms of the virus".
