Hundreds of anti-nuclear and pro-independence activists set up a
road blockade in Tahiti to protest the looming resumption of
French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll. Traffic in the capital, Papeete was at a standstill for at least six hours as the demonstrators filled the streets. They blocked the road giving access to the Tahitian capital, slamming the tests and the arrest by the French military of Greenpeace activists and Polynesian pro-independence leader Oscar Temaru on Friday (1/9). Temaru's supporters demanded his return.
