STORYLINE:
Leaders of African states and foreign dignitaries started arriving on Saturday for an event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), a continentwide organisation that spearheaded efforts in the 1960s to liberate Africa from its colonial masters.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and the leaders of South Africa, Zimbabwe, DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), and Nigeria were seen arriving.
The OAU was founded in Addis Ababa in May 1963, and became known as the African Union (AU) in 2002.
Leaders of the 53-member AU gathered in Addis Ababa for week-long celebrations now want to map out the next 50 years of political and economic integration.
Its agenda is laid out in a document called "Vision 2063" which specifies economic and social developments as a major priority.
Making his first official trip to sub-Saharan Africa, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday demanded that Nigeria respect human rights as it cracks down on Islamist extremists, and pledged to work hard in the coming months to ease tensions between Sudan and South Sudan.
