How to tell if firewood is dry? When seasoning firewood, a good tool to have to measure moisture content in firewood is a moisture meter. If you are unaware how old some firewood is, this is a good tool to gauge moisture content in firewood. Eventually, you will gain enough experience where you will no longer need a moisture meter. Some moisture meters give digital readouts and this unit I have displays moisture content via varying pitched sounds. Moisture content in firewood should be about 20%. When it is too dry, it burns to quickly. Seasoning firewood should be done for at least a year, the more the better.
