Brahma Vihara Arama or better known as Vihara Banjar is located in Gang Sahadewa, Banjar Tegeha hilly area, Banjar Village, Banjar District, Buleleng Regency, Bali Province with an area of 9 hectares. Brahma Vihara Arama is about 22 kilometers west of Singaraja city. If from Denpasar, the trip to this location can be directly through the Munduk area or you can choose an alternative to Singaraja City. It takes approximately 2.5 hours from Denpasar. It is not difficult to find this location, because the road access can already be passed by four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles.
The monastery was not only a place of prayer and meditation for Buddhists which was built by the Giri Rakito Mahatera Foundation. However, the monastery in the hilly area of the Banjar Dinas Tegeha, Banjar Village / District is also being developed as a spiritual tourism site. Located at an altitude, making this largest monastery in Bali is perfect for seeing the natural beauty of Buleleng.
The history of the establishment of the Brahma Vihara Arama was around 1960 and completed in 1970. Broadly speaking, the Brahma Vihara Arama Banjar consists of five building complexes namely Upasatha Gara, Kuti, Dhamasala, Bodi Tree, Stupa. Several areas complement this place. The top area is a miniature of Borobudur Temple. From this area, the view from a height is very interesting. Visitors can take advantage of this area as a place to capture moments with stunning natural scenery. On the upper right side of the entrance, there is also a pagoda building. For those who are interested, in this place visitors can get predictions about life. Buddha's distinctive features are also highlighted by several Buddhist statues in several corners of the monastery, body trees, stupas and pagodas. Every building, even the steps in the vihara banjar, is said to have Buddhist meaning and teachings. Candi Bentar, the entrance to the stupa building resembling a miniature of Borobudur, is a prime spot for people to take pictures. The highest peak offers a wide expanse of sky coupled with natural lowland panoramas that can be recorded from the photo area. On the other hand, the stupa at the western end of the monastery is unique in that the remains of a number of personal belongings of Dalai Lama XIV, the supreme leader of Tibetan Buddhism, who had visited Bharmavihara Arama in 1982. Vihara Banjar is also accompanied by a building resembling a miniature Borobudur on the highest plateau.
Apart from a place of worship and meditation, the Brahmavihara Arama is also accompanied by a place to stay for devotees who wish to join a meditation program.
Since three decades ago, Brahmavihara Banjar has been visited by many domestic and foreign guests. The place, which was opened and developed into a spiritual tourism object since 1973, has become one of the best-selling tourist objects in Buleleng.
The chairman of the Giri Rakito Mahatera Foundation, Ida Bagus Rahoela, recently said that the establishment of a place for Buddhist prayer and meditation went through a very long process. The building of the meditation place was initiated by Ida Bagus Rahoela's grandfather, Ida Ketut Jelantik, who is none other than the younger brother of Rahoela's grandmother.
Interestingly, Brahmavihara Arama is always full of visitors every year who register themselves to participate in the meditation program that takes place at the monastery. The participants were not only from Bali, in fact, it was not uncommon for participants to come from abroad, especially from Europe.
No wonder when visiting this place many foreign tourists flock to this tourist attraction. Apart from displaying the beauty of the building which is a place of worship for Buddhists, natural beauty from a height can also be enjoyed from this place.
