STORYLINE:
A group of 140 Belgian troops landed at Beirut international airport on Wednesday to join the UN force and help with clearing landmines from the war-scarred territory.
Overall, Belgium hopes to have some 420 troops in Lebanon by October 6 to take part in the peacekeeping force of some 15-thousand UN troops there.
The Belgian government has said the troops would be able to take all necessary measures to defend themselves. Of the 420-strong force, 138 will provide force protection to the engineers and medics.
" Our people are here to protect the people who will build the hospital and people who will dismantle the bombs," said Sergeant William Bongers of the Belgium army.
Meanwhile, French troops began to rebuild a destroyed bridge in Ghobeiry at the entrance of Beirut Southern Suburb on Wednesday.
Tens of French troops wearing green helmets were working to fix the bridge which was destroyed during the conflict between Hezbollah and the Israelis.
The 34 day conflict ended last month following a UN brokered cease-fire resolution.
Under the terms of the cease-fire, an expanded UN force of 15-thousand troops is to be deployed in south Lebanon to maintain the cessation of hostilities, help consolidate Lebanese army control of the Hezbollah stronghold, and help rebuild Lebanese infrastructure.
