William Cox (1764-1837) was born at Wimborne, Dorset, England. He then later moved to Devizes, Wiltshire, where he married Rebecca Upjohn of Bristol and became a clockmaker. He joined the army and escorted a convict ship to Australia. He was appointed magistrate and using convict labour, built the first road over the Blue Mountains.
