The Tips to Know for a Proper Selective Pallet Rack Installation
Learn how to correctly assemble a selective rack system with the pallet rack installation steps detailed below.

Staging Your Pallet Rack System Components
Designate a staging area - Isolate an area that will keep the rack components and accessories together during delivery and through the installation process.
Inventory review - Upon receipt of the building materials, confirm that all components were delivered and arrived in usable shape. Do this for each stage of the build if broken into phases. Immediately order missing or replacement components if necessary to maintain the installation schedule.
Inspect the warehouse floor - The slab must meet the minimal requirement of 6” for safe anchoring or standard racking systems. Look for imperfections or sloping that may affect the installation.
Inspect the build space - Asses the area to verify that it is free from obstructions that could interfere with the structure, i.e., lighting, utility equipment, sprinklers, and building columns, which should be identified in the engineering plans.
Outline the “starter bay” - Use chalk to create the starter bay. Outline the entire down-aisle length of the system using the front column for reference, and ensure the aisle width accommodates the turn radius of your forklift.
On Your Mark -- Get Set to Build
We recommend using two people minimum for pallet rack installation. You will also need a certified forklift operator.
1. Working along your chalk line, install the first two uprights at the bay width indicated on the installation drawings.
2. Starting at the bottom of both uprights, measure up to each beam location and mark it using the permanent marker. Repeat this step on the front and rear uprights of the starter rack section.
3. Install the beams at the marked locations beginning with the bottom rear position, moving up to the top rear position. Hook the beam connectors into the teardrop “punch” openings along the uprights. Secure each beam connector to the upright with a safety clip.
4. Once the rear beams are installed, move to the front beams. Start at the top and work your way down to assemble the front of the starter section. Again, secure the beam connectors with safety clips.
5. Check that the rack is plumb and level, then tighten the connections. Diagonal post-to-post measurements within the bay should be equal at horizontal planes near the ground and the top of uprights.
6. Insert shims between the baseplate and floor to raise columns if necessary. Shim size should be equal to or greater than the size of the baseplate --See RMI guidelines for stacking shims.
The Formula for Allowable Tolerance for Out of Plumb
Total Rack Height/240
- If the upright frame is 144”, the allowable tolerance = 0.6”
- If the upright frame is 240”h, the allowable tolerance = 1”
- If your upright frame is 360”h, the allowable tolerance is 1.5”
7. Make sure all bays are plumb before anchoring. If there are column protectors, do not share an anchor with the upright. Anchor them separately. Every baseplate must have at least (1) anchor --the system design will indicate the number and size of the anchors. Be aware that extra holes in the baseplate allow the upright to be re-anchored if an anchor is damaged or bends during installation.
Installer Tip - Use the string line to snap out a guide running the length of the row to ensure you build the rack rows straight.
8. After confirming that the starter bay is installed correctly, build out the additional bays -- continue to confirm each is plumb and level before moving on.
