Top 10 African Countries with Longest Coastline
Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented to you by Displore and thanks for watching. In this video, we shall be taking you around the coastlines of Africa presenting to you the top 10 African countries with the longest coastline. Coastlines are areas that lie between land and sea. If Africa’s 38 countries and island states were a single country, its total coastline length would rank as the 5th longest in the world, ahead of Russia and just under the combined coastal lengths of Australia and the United States. Even though Africa is ranked as the second-largest continent on Earth at 30, 37 million square kilometers, its coastline at an estimated 30,500 km is considered to be shorter than that of Europe, because there are few inlets and large bays or gulfs. However, this estimate excludes the continents ocean islands, which, when added comes to just over 40,000 km.

When considering the above, the lengths/distances indicated need to be treated as rough estimates as the totals would vary depending on the approach used. This is because the measure of a country’s coastline varies with the scale at which it is measured, so small-scale maps yield lower values of coastline measurement than do larger-scale maps. The coastlines of most African countries are not a certainty as most of them are estimated. To settle this contentious anomaly, as one of its objectives, Walk4Africa.org, the world’s largest and longest public-participation walkathon, aims to accurately measure the coastlines of all 38 African countries and ocean islands over a period of 10 years beginning in September 2020. But until then, here are the top 10 African countries considered to currently have the longest coastlines.
10. Namibia – Coastline - 1,572km
From the Skeleton Coast in the north to the Orange River in the south, Namibia has nearly a thousand miles of coastline. For much of that distance, the windblown dunes of the Namib Desert reach right to the pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean, leaving a stark yet beautiful landscape. Shaped by the winds and largely unpopulated, Namibia’s coastal area is home to only a handful of towns and villages. Shipwrecks lie in place for decades, slowly reclaimed by the sea or the desert. In places, fur seals gather in huge numbers, mostly free from harassment. But then the coastline of Namibia is a picturesque shores and dunes with its wildlife, and some remaining evidence of its time as a German colony. The Namibian coastline is currently estimated to be 1,572km.
9. Angola – Namibia - 1,600km
Angola is located on the western Atlantic Coast of Central Africa between Namibia and the Republic of the Congo. It also is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia to the east. The country consists of a sparsely watered and somewhat sterile coastal plain extending inland for a distance varying from 1000 to 1,600 km. Slightly inland and parallel to the coast is a belt of hills and mountains and behind those a large plateau. The total land size is 1,246,700 km2 and it has an Exclusive Economic Zone of 518,433 km2 with a coastline estimated to be 1,600km.
