Sunday, October 11 marked the United Nations annual observance of the International Day of the Girl Child. In Somalia, a mother-daughter duo has dedicated their lives to supporting women and girls establishing the country’s first rape crisis center. VOA’s Salem Solomon spoke with Ilwad Elman who, along with her mother, Fartuun Adan, who are the recipients of the 2020 Aurora Prize for awakening humanity for their efforts in providing services to communities affected by the conflict in Somalia. In an excerpt from a one-on-one interview, Elman describes her work at the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center in Somalia to help women and girls affected by gender-based violence.
