Barack Obama vowed to pursue the war on terror with vigor as he met with the president of Afghanistan. The presumed Democratic presidential nominee is in the third day of his overseas trip, designed to bolster his foreign policy credentials. He me with President Hamid Karzai at the presidential palace. Obama has previously criticized the Afghan leader for not doing more to build confidence in his government. A Karzai spokesperson says Obama's message was positive. The Illinois senator has made Afghanistan a centerpiece in his proposal for dealing with terrorism threats.

Obama's trip is officially a congressional delegation. He's travelling with Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a Democrat. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska is also on the trip. Obama's itinerary remains a closely guarded secret and media access to him has been limited.
The rest of his trip will take him to Iraq and the Middle East. Later in the week he'll visit Germany, France and England.
