Fernando Montiel (42-2-2) vs Nonito Donaire (25-1) was a 118 world title fight, which pitted 2 fighters both on the pound 4 pound list (Ring rated Donaire as #5 & Montiel #7). Donaire at the time was a two weight world champion moving up to Batam to challenge for his third world title. He'd only have one fight at Bantam up to this point & was rated as the #5 Batam by Ring Magazine. Montiel rated as the #1 in the division by Ring was a unified WBC & WBO World Champion. He was installed as a 2-to-1 underdog by the casino & thus would be making his fourth title defense coming off a second-round knockout of Jovanny Soto in a December non-title bout designed to be his final tune-up before facing Donaire.

Accomplishments:
In total, Donaire has held nine world titles by the main four boxing sanctioning bodies, as well as the IBO flyweight title, the WBA interim super flyweight title, and the Ring magazine and lineal super bantamweight titles.
