OVERVIEW
Trauma affects the brain and the body, causing a number of physical and mental struggles as people with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) age. Accessing culturally relevant trauma-informed care is a major challenge for people with IDD. Healthcare providers, social service providers, and community supports may have biases about people with disability that interfere with their ability to provide culturally acceptable care. This webinar examines historical perspectives on ableism and disability bias and reviews the impact of ableism in healthcare for people with IDD through case-based learning. We will discuss key approaches, including trauma-informed care, to support people with IDD who experienced sexual trauma.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Identify key actions to respond to people who they think may be experiencing sexual or other forms of abuse or forms of trauma.
2. Discuss the value and impact of trauma-informed approach and strategies to support people with disabilities.
