Nationwide title sequences are always a challenge - the BBC's Lime Grove based graphics department always pulled out all the stops for Lime Grove programmes. So it seemed like a pretty good test of Synfig Studio to see whether I could reproduce one using it.
The NW logo animation was really, really easy to do in Synfig - it was an Advanced Bline Outline animation and I managed to do what would have been an hour of work in Flash in about five minutes. I used Warp layers to do all the flipping, I would have resorted to Swift 3D to do that sort of thing in the past. The outlines around everything are Shade layers with the Amount set to 2 or more. The optical wipes were just a gradient layer animated. It's all so easy to do in Synfig Studio when you work out what you're doing.
The video was all filmised in Kdenlive, apart from the animations where the gate weave was added in Synfig Studio. I only used Inkscape to convert the text into outlines. The announcement audio was recorded in Audacity.
I had to upload the video three times as the programme name flips that make up most of this sequence appear to be a really, really hard test of video encoders.
The BBC West globe is a Swift 3D/Inkscape co-production, which I've uploaded before. Thanks as always to Rory Clark who supplied a 1978 copy of the Nationwide titles as source material. I could smell the fish fingers, chips and peas that were a usual accompaniment to this programme when I was working on this; I just hope Bob Richardson approves!
