How can we protect, preserve and restore marine ecosystems?
Kerry and Louise discuss their whole systems approach to protecting marine ecosystems whilst ensuring sustainable blue-green growth.
We have ten years to stop the effects of climate change.
Our marine natural capital is essential for human life, providing food, producing oxygen and storing carbon. Habitats and ecosystems are under extreme pressure from land through to the deep-sea. Human impacts including destructive coastal developments, fishing, mining and climate change are already having detrimental effects on marine life. Transdisciplinary research including engineers, ecologists, and marine biologists, together with coastal communities and policy makers, is the only way to ensure our marine ecosystems are protected, preserved and restored.
Kerry Howell is Professor in Deep-sea Ecology and Louise Firth is Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Plymouth.
