The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued Guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar for the Universities in View of COVID-19 Pandemic and Subsequent Lockdown. The Commission approved the recommendations of the Expert Committee regarding conduct of terminal semester(s)/ final year(s) examinations by the universities/ institutions to be completed by the end of September,2020 in offline (pen & paper) online/ blended (online + offline) mode.
The UGC’s decision to enforce exams for final-year students, while cancelling other semester exams, betrays its poor understanding of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) adopted by India’s universities. The UGC guidelines require universities to complete all final-semester exams by the end of September. This timeline is cruel at a time when a poor economic outlook, lack of jobs in the market and a global health crisis are already troubling the youth.
