Lisa Savage joined me to tell of the recent dedication of a roadway exiting from I-95 in S. Portland, Maine dedicated to Samantha Smith the 10 year old girl from Manchester, Maine who wrote a letter to Soviet General Secretary of the Communist Party wanting to understand why the Soviet Union and the United States were risking nuclear war. She received a personal invitation to visit the Soviet Union and did so with her parents pm July 7, 1983. She spent time in Artek, a your Pioneer camp in Crimea.
Samantha died on August 25, 1985 at age 13 in the crash of a small plane in Auburn, Maine. She was returning home with her father from filming a segment for Lime Street. She is still widely remembered throughout Russia.
