The global illegal trade of wildlife animals is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises, believed to be worth up to $23 billion a year. Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic (which is very likely to have originated from zoonotic sources), conversations around a global strategy to end the illegal trade have been amplified both by governments and international organizations. This is a problem that Nigeria is currently sitting in the center of. Did you know that more than half of all seizures of pangolin scales worldwide in 2019 could be traced back to Nigeria? And according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, data suggests an increasing role of Nigeria in the illicit ivory trade.
