IN THE STUDIO is a series of discussions on drum/percussion concept, technique, and aesthetic in the informal setting of percussionist T.J. Troy’s home studio space. Each video features in-depth discussion on various rhythmic concepts, and comes annotated with written examples embedded in the video, allowing you to practice along with me on the various ideas included.
This video focuses on creating a Khaliji-style Percussion Ensemble groove. We will layer six different percussion instruments and create a dynamic, polymetric composition, introducing a variety of short rhythmic cycles performed on different drums, including Darbukah, Riqq, Bongo, Djembe, Frame Drum, and it would never be Khaliji music without hand claps.
