Small dings don't affect performance. Big dings can easily be blown out. Bent & twisted pipes are much harder to repair. Carbon Fiber pipe guards protect against small dings, but cause bent pipes on bigger impacts. I recommend either a pipe guard/skid plate combo or no pipe guard at all. Personally I don't run a guard, and I blow out the dents once the pipe gets rough. After a few years I'll replace the pipe, which is a similar price to a carbon guard.
