In the Devotional 2024 Series 9 (September), we continue with the Chronological Study Bible by Thomas Nelson, copyright 2014, from Epoch 5 on the monarchy of Judah in the period of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The Chronological Study Bible integrates the books of the prophets into the narratives of the kings of Judah and Israel. In these 10 devotional segments, we follow the reigns of King Josiah (640-609 B.C.) and King Jehoiakim (609-598 B.C.). We also follow the ministries of two prophets in Judah, Jeremiah (627-586 B.C.) and Habakkuk (from about the end of Josiah’s reign to the early years of Jehoiakim’s reign). Israel had already fallen to Assyria in 722 B.C. King Sennacherib of Assyria (704-681 B.C.) dominated over neighbouring countries for a while. But King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (605-562 B.C.) replaced Assyria as the dominating power. The Chronological Study Bible brings us to the books of II Kings, II Chronicles, Jeremiah and Habakkuk, to Epoch 5 at the height of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, pages 685 to 729.
In our present world, political leaders come and go. Even nations rise and fall. But God controls human history. He reigns from above and He intervenes whenever He chooses. God warns the nations through His prophets, desiring to see repentance so that He may forgive. He will punish, and He will reward. He calls all nations and individuals to return to Him. God is King.
The purpose of the devotional is to draw close to God rather than an accumulation of Biblical knowledge. By knowing God, we appreciate His character of holiness, righteousness, justice, compassion, mercy, and loving-kindness (hesed). His promise never fails. Our faith stands on solid rock. We are living in turbulent times of war, violence, lawlessness, and polarization. Nevertheless, God keeps His covenant. He is faithful and trust-worthy. The darkest times only throw us into the arms of God. True worshipers of the living God will be united with Him in heaven. We have hope. Praise the Lord!

Jeremiah 6:10-11a, 13-19 Ask for the Ancient Paths
02:27 - 10 To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me?
Their ears are closed so they cannot hear.
The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.
02:49 - 11A But I am full of the wrath of the LORD, and I cannot hold it in.
02:57 - 13 “From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.
03:12 - 14 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious.
‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.
03:29 - 15 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all;
they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen;
they will be brought down when I punish them,” says the LORD.
03:57 - 16 This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
04:22 - 17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But you said, ‘We will not listen.’
04:36 - 18 Therefore hear, you nations; you who are witnesses, observe what will happen to them.
04:48 - 19 Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes,
because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.
