Wellington, Texas – HGTV Home Town Takeover application.
Wellington, Texas is one small town with a big—really big—heart. We wake up every morning to a beautiful West Texas sunrise, get dressed and go to work, work all day and come home to our families. What makes this small town so special is that we truly love each other with a genuine caring, revealed through the many selfless acts of kindness. We care deeply about the well-being of our town. We are committed to preserving what we have here and are willing to work to make it even greater.
With are a blend of many different cultures and backgrounds, we have teachers, farm laborers, farmers, nurses, a doctor, city council members, county commissioners, a couple of lawyers, and many retired citizens, all living together in one of the happiest towns in Texas. We have a post office, a small rural hospital, a beautiful, historic courthouse and an amazing school with around 500 students.
Kids get to roam the streets here, often finding a group of future “Skyrocket” football players gathering for a quick scrimmage in a neighbor’s front yard. Their parents feel safe letting them play, knowing that their friends are all looking out for their children. We have a very low incidence of crime here. We have a diverse group of people living in the neighborhoods of Wellington. Young couples, older families, single people and retired senior citizens live harmoniously together with the same goal in mind—living a happy and peaceful life. On those same streets are beautiful homes and then there are those that could use a facelift, both inside and outside as well.
Wellington has some beautiful, historic buildings that we want to restore for the future generations who will live here. Our courthouse has a beautiful Art Deco third floor courtroom that has not been used since the 1940s. We long to restore that gem for us to use for all court proceedings. We have a city park established in 1918 that needs a lot of love, and we have a sweet little diner that needs a total renovation. It’s been here since the 1950s and continues to be one of our best places to eat and visit to stay updated on Wellington news.
Even though we are a small town of about 2,500 people, we are fortunate to have an amazing public library that also serves our school system. We also get to enjoy first run movies, as well as some amazing events at our renovated Ritz Theatre, located near our Collingsworth County Courthouse Square. We have a water park and an activity center for our citizens to enjoy. We are so proud of these additions to our town, but we long to see new small businesses on our downtown area. We have many churches of all different denominations. We need more places for people to stay when they visit us for a concert or a weekend of hunting. We envision transforming some of the buildings on our square into quaint bed and breakfast establishments.
Our young couples who have chosen to move back home to Wellington to raise their families have a vision for the future of their hometown. They long to restore the square to its former glory so that our citizens and our visitors can walk around the square and enjoy quaint shops and bistros or a coffee shop. There is a spark in their hearts for this to happen with a motivation to work hard to see it in the future. We just lack the resources to make it happen.
Our town of Wellington has heart. We love the people here and we love the sweet spirit of loving and caring. The vision that we have for our town is one that will allow future generations to enjoy the great activities and life that only a small town can offer. We are a community minded town whose people are not afraid of hard work. Volunteering in our town is just a way of life for us. We are a service minded group and we all share a deep love of God, family and the USA.
As Baxter Black, a well know “Cowboy” author and speaker once stated, “Wellington is the best little gem of West Texas!” He is right. Wellington is one special place with a big ole heart of love.
