Aerogels as innovative insulation materials - a range of acoustic properties (first presented by Christiane Gillner at DAGA 2021)
Aerogels are highly porous solids that are manufactured in a sol-gel process with subsequent supercritical drying. This process creates materials with a porosity of more than 95 percent, which gives aerogels the following characteristics:
- a very low density due to the high proportion of air
- good sound absorption properties
- a very low thermal conductivity
Because of these extraordinary properties, aerogels offer solutions for various industries, for example aviation, and are overall very promising for solutions with a diverse and consistently high level of insulation.
In addition, the acoustic properties of aerogels can be tailored to fulfil the specific requirements of the application, e.g. sound absorption in different frequency ranges. The material’s properties can be influenced by using different ingredients or variations in the manufacturing process.
In this video Christiane Gillner (Novicos) presents how the examination of different samples gives an insight in the possible range of acoustic and physical properties.
The presented data were collected and analyzed in one of our research projects in collaboration with Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and Universität zu Köln.
