Despite enormous natural resources and raw material deposits in Laos, the country is still one of the poorest in the world. The profits from the use of these resources flows mainly into foreign countries and into the hands of a few powerful people in Laos.
About 40% of the land area in Laos is owned by foreign investors, without access for the Laos people. The profits are transferred abroad, so there is no money left for development in Laos. The government of the Laos PDR made long time land leases 99 Yesrs in many provinces, with China; populated by hundred thousand of Chinese people with their own administration, this is a new kind of colonialism. The Chinese arrangement in Laos benefits it only benefits investors and corrupt officials.
The main problem of the Lao PDR, in addition to the dictatorship is the massive corruption in every stage of the administration . International aid is still a victim of the corruption.
The government has signed the UN declaration of human rights but it is not implemented in the country. In Laos, for example, there have been several decrees and laws in recent years that increasingly restrict freedom of the press and freedom of expression. There are also restrictive internet controls.
Civil rights activists and freelance journalists are threatened by state officials on social networks. Every critic now is a discretization of the system, so dissidents are sentenced up to 20 years in prison.
