(7 Oct 2016) Approximately 800 students protested in central Rome on Friday against the Italian government's planned education reforms as well as a planned referendum on constitutional reform to be held on 4 December.
Alessio Angelucci, the Secretary of the Communist Youth, said the protest was a "message" to the government of Matteo Renzi that policies had "dismantled public education in Italy and lead to the formation of discriminatory schooling that gives different opportunities to different social classes."
Police intervened when a group of students split off from the main march and started heading in the direction of Parliament.
The protest continued on peacefully to the Ministry of Education.
